Catherine's Story
A penniless Prussian princess who couldn’t speak Russian took the throne and became Russia’s longest-serving female ruler. Whilst Catherine’s record as a leader wasn’t spotless, she was indisputably impressive. She modernized Russia, promoted education for women, and was an early advocate for vaccines – but she is remembered, unfairly, for having an insatiable sexual appetite. Quite simply, this happened because enemies who wanted to challenge her power saw her sexuality as something that could be used to ruin her reputation. In reality, she was only involved in 12 romantic relationships, with most lasting for more than two years… not exactly a raging nymphomaniac.
