Echo's Story
This name might be less familiar to you than the others, because Echo was doomed to be the oft-forgotten character in the story of Narcissus. Echo was a mountain nymph with a penchant for talking – something she was punished for. Zeus used her to distract his wife whilst he conducted his many extra-marital affairs. Echo’s voice was collateral damage. When she fell in love with Narcissus, it was so toxic and draining that even her body faded away. Echo is another in the line of women who have had their voices stolen because of men – in her case, literally.
